Sun Facts
How and Why to Protect Your Skin
Q1.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UVA AND UVB RAYS?
UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, causing signs of ageing, collagen damage, and looser skin. UVA rays also make you tan – but luckily, so do our self-tanners! UVB rays are more superficial – they cause sunburn as well as longer-lasting tans. It's important to get protection from both kinds of rays.
Q2.
WHAT DOES SPF MEAN?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It tells you the product's ability to block rays and prevent sunburn. The higher the SPF number, the better it filters both kinds of UV rays.
Q3.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REAPPLY SUNSCREEN?
Every two hours, or every hour in intense sunlight. Also, every time you come out of the water, every time you work out, and every time you change your clothes, reapply. It's easy, and it helps keep you safe.
Q4.
DO I NEED SPF IN THE SHADE?
YES. Because sand reflects 20% of the sun's rays and snow reflects 85% (!!!), you always need sun protection, even under a parasol or sun hat. As for clouds, they may block the sun from view, but they don't protect from UV rays.
Q5.
WHAT TIME OF DAY IS DANGEROUS FOR SUN EXPOSURE?
Between the hours of 12-4pm, the sun's rays are strongest, and they burn more than they tan. Use extra protection when possible, including SPF and coverage like tunics, rash guards, and umbrellas.
Q6.
WHEN DOES SPF EXPIRE?
SPF that's exposed to heat for long periods of time can lose its protective ability. Toss your sunscreen after one year to ensure you get the strongest coverage possible.
Q7.
CAN MY MEDICATION INCREASE MY RISK OF SUNBURN?
It depends. Certain medicines (like antibiotics and acne treatments) do influence the way your skin reacts to sun. When you get a new prescription, always ask your doctor for advice on sun care!
